HOW TO CRAFT THE MOST POWERFUL COFFEE AND TEA ELIXIRS

So, Exactly What Is An Elixir?

An elixir is any beverage that is capable of improving health and creating an overall sense of well-being. Elixirs are essentially very precise and intelligently crafted medicinal foods, and serve as a delivery system for all of the herbs and superfoods that you choose to nourish your body with. Crafting elixirs (aka tonics) is a wonderful art that can evolve over time as you learn the way different herbs and ingredients work together. The basic formula for crafting is simple and is a fun and inspiring process.

First, set and intention of the desired outcome of the tonic.  For example, this could be a specific health benefit, like boosting the immune system, or you may simply want more energy to carry your day. Next, craft the tonic with herbs that support your desired outcome. Herbs sometimes take a little time to assimilate, but soon you will begin to see the magic that the plants and superfoods provide you with.

At Elementals OR-I-GIN, we provide you with an easy system to craft good herbal elixirs with our 3 PART SYSTEM.

Part 1
, choose your favorite Coffee or TeaPart 2, pick one of our Herbal Extracts. And, Part 3, add your favorite Superfoods. Creating the drinks with this system is quick, easy and creates a complementary relationship between your tea or coffee base, and all the herbs and superfoods that you add in afterward.

Now that you understand the basis for our 3 PART SYSTEM, I will go into more detail about each Part and talk about the benefits to you.

PART 1

COFFEE TALK

Traditionally, coffee was used as a medicinal plant, but as coffee became more popular and turned into an “industry”, ingredients have been cheapened and loads of artificial flavors, preservatives and sugars have been added. This turned the most precious medicinal plant into a toxic beverage.

In fact, some years ago, I was doing research on one of my favorite adaptogenic herbs of all time, Rhodiola Rosea, and the article spoke about how Siberian Shaman have used coffee combined with rhodiola, because the coffee acts as a vasodilator. Essentially, the coffee helped to more quickly and efficiently distribute the rhodiola into the body. This is just one example of how coffees can act as an amazing base for herbal tonics and elixirs.

Coffee is a complex mixture of plant compounds, some of which have been revealed in laboratories to have biological effects. Studies have shown that certain compounds have neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the risk of illness and disease.

One of the most prominent coffee phytochemicals is caffeine. Caffeine stimulates the nervous system, causing it to send signals to the fat cells to break down body fat. Then, these body fats are released into the blood as free fatty acids, making them available as fuel.

Caffeine also increase Epinephrine (Adrenaline) levels in the blood.  This "fight or flight" hormone is designed to make our bodies ready for intense physical exertion.

Lastly, coffee also contains several important nutrients, including Magnesium and Riboflavin for energy production, Pantothenic Acid to support athletic performance, Manganese necessary for normal brain function, Potassium for enhanced muscle strength and Niacin which benefits heart health.

FOR THE LOVE OF TEA

Tea has been around for millennia, and is the second most widely consumed beverage in the world, after water.

Much research suggests drinking tea can fight diseases and even lengthen life. This is due to tea's high concentration of antioxidants called polyphenols, which may contribute to the prevention of cancer, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular diseases. While polyphenols are also found in abundance in fruits, vegetables, and grains (and also coffee in even higher amounts) tea is especially and uniquely rich in particular types of polyphenols called catechins (specifically, EGCG) that may be the most powerful ones of all.

Other benefits of tea include; lowered cholesterol, reduced cortisol levels, lower levels of inflammation and inflammatory reactions, increased memory, focus & concentration, anti-allergen, reduced risk of stroke, lower risk of dementia, and overall improved health.

For the connoisseurs in the audience, just as wine and coffee has countless types, blends, styles, countries of origins and more, tea also offers countless varieties and flavors.

PART 2

DUAL EXTRACT TINCTURES

A “dual extract” simply means a ratio of water and alcohol. A dual extract is both a hot water extraction and an alcohol extraction, after which, the resulting liquid concentrations are then brought together to give you the final formula.

In the previous section, we talked about tea. Tea is produced by boiling parts of plants in water, which is also known as a “decoction”. For thousands of years, herbal medicines have been harvested from wild landscapes and were boiled in water to extract their medicinal properties.

Now, the chemistry of alcohol is very different than that of water, and alcohol has the ability to extract components that are not able to be extracted with hot water. Hence this is the reason for a “dual extract”. We are able to contain the full potential and efficacy of each herb in the formula, as well as, contain the full spectrum of available plant constituents.

Lastly, the alcohol acts as a supreme preserver of the plant constituents. It is not only able to capture, but also retain the full potency and strength of the magical plant essences.

POWDERED HERBAL EXTRACTS

NOMAD APOTHECARY believes in the Full Spectrum method of extraction. An easy way to explain this method is by comparing it with a "standardized" extract.

The standardized method aims to isolate and extract specific active ingredients from herbs. Using standardized extracts, the thought is that the final product will be more consistent and controlled.

The Full Spectrum method keeps the plant as close to its natural makeup as possible. By extracting the whole herbal component (i.e. root, seed, leaf, berry, or flower, etc.) that contains the plant's active medicinal ingredients, we maintain the plant's natural integrity and balance. This process enhances the overall therapeutic effects and keeps the extract as close to the original plant as possible.

Think of herbs as lending a “helping hand” and offering “just enough medicine” for your body to finish its natural healing work. Herbs work in synergy to restore and nurture our bodies at the deepest level – our genes. As this happens, you receive a synergistic blend of nutrients working together for you, instead of an extracted compound leading to negative side effects if not taken correctly. The reason we use Full Spectrum herbal blends is because the healing potential of the plant is preserved when it’s taken in its most natural form.

Our philosophy and methodology is a practice of true Synergy. Synergy is the interaction of multiple elements in a system to produce an effect different from, or greater than, the sum of their individual effects. The term synergy comes from the Greek word synergia, meaning “working together”.

Some of the most well rounded, potent, and therapeutic super herbs are, chaga mushroom, rhodiola rosea root, reishi mushroom, astragalus root, suma root (Brazilian ginseng), eleuthero root (Siberian ginseng), ginger root, ashwagandha root (Indian ginseng), brahmi leaf (bacopa monnieri), gotu kola leaf and cayenne fruiting body.

PART 3

ALL HAIL THE SUPERFOODS

Superfoods broaden the spectrum even further. Some of my favorites are maca, cacao, coconut, spirulina, wheat grass, turmeric and mesquite.

They are very unique among common food selections for a multitude of reasons and they fall into an advanced nutrition category. Superfoods have been found throughout every major culture, as they were highly revered, high nutritionally dense, and longevity enhancing foods.

Superfoods are true therapy for the body, as healing agents and by offering preventative attributes, supporting long life, fertility, immunity, detoxification and energy.

Alchemical Formulation

In summary, each herb that we include is a result of our wholistic and synergistic methodology. We have taken great care to understand the properties of every plant that we use and how they combine with each other to affect the mind/body/spirit interface.

Our goal with elixirs is taking the best that we can find from each ancient herbal tradition and learning to work with them and combine them with the best of what the superherb, superfood and raw foodist world has to offer. The end result for you is powerful health in a system that is easy to incorporate into any lifestyle. And more importantly, it’s a system that is built to support you in being the greatest version of yourself!
